I think Japanese Anime. I have lived with american cartoons all my life and they all ahev the same old stuff. But the japanese have a different style. So its nice to see something new.

Well, thats a hard call. American Cartoons and Japanese Anime are geared towards different audiences. Anime toward many different age groups, and Cartoons towards mostly children, (except a select few like simpons, the critic, family guy, american dad, and anything else on adult swim). The odd thing now is that most saturday morning cartoons are not cartoons, but rather anime-toons. Pokemon, Rave Master, etc. I wouldnt say that is a good thing tho.

There is something called atmosphere which Anime has a lot of and Cartoons have none of. Although if I just want a laugh, I'll watch Family Guy or the like.

It's hard to say. I love anime, it's such a unique artform.

But then there's Disney, the Godfather of animation and the inspiration for many anime artists, especially the renowned Hayao Miyazaki.
I like Disney best, but anime comes in close second...^_^

I don't think there's a better medium yet. Americanime focus more on the dialogue aspect of cartoons, while Japanime focuses more on the characterization. I seriously think both an American and Japanese film company should merge to create one breath-takingly brilliant looking masterpiece.

Anime for me. American cartoons are more simple. And for me I need varity anyway.

Anime is great if I want to read an awesome comic but if I want to laugh american cartoons are funny.

Anime for me, they have variety and they have a heck of alot more detail and they are more true to life (except in some anime they have huge eyes!:))

I still dont think you can compare the two. Anime generally has a plot that runs through the entire series, while with cartoons you can sit down and jump right in. As x911 said, if you want to laugh then watch american cartoons. I know there are some funny animes, but I have yet to watch an anime as funny as family guy, the critic, futurama, simpsons, etc. As I said before, both are great - they just have their different purposes.

American Cartoons. Hands down. Think "The Simpsons," "Family Guy," "King of the Hill." Popular especially with the college crowd because they're socially relevant, making fun of politics and society in general. Even Bugs Bunny has his political and cultural moments. My first exposure to Classical Music and Opera was from watching Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse. Intelligent anime like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo are obvious exceptions as far as anime is concerned. And when was the last time you heard Sailor Moon yell "And knowing's half the battle!!" I mean even anime magazines say that there is a lack of quality anime out there today. And here in the US it's primarily associated with Hentai and porn. Until mainstream anime drops the VAPID titles like Dragonball Z (or GT whatever it is now) it will continue to be seen as either cutsie and childish, corporate machines cranking out toys and game cards, or just an excuse for grown men to watch teenage girls get raped by aliens with a 30' long phallus.

Anime is good for some action, but I'd take GI Joe over Appleseed anyday.

By the way, this is going to make me seem old, but it's just that all the good cartoons on TV are Anime nowadays that we're even having this debate.

Back in the day (80s and early 90s) there was a huge amount of great American (and some imported Japanese) animation. It was about the same quality of it's japanese counterparts, and was thematically the same, telling long stories over a number of episodes.

However, with the rise of cable and the decline of the saturday morning (and afterschool) cartoon, such wonderful shows went the way of the dodos.

I love anime. But even more do I love the Transformers, Darkwing Duck, Gargoyles, Duck Tales, Batman the Animated Series (1-3 seasons), etc.
