If it's English language, I've mostly used my local Borders (if you can call "half way across the county" local); for Japanese language manga and novels, I've mostly bought mail order from Sasuga Books, though lately my wife has been dragging me to New York City so she can attend televangelist revival meetings, so I take those chances to hike from Penn Central to Kinokuniya (by Rockefeller Center) or Book-Off (by the main library)... there are a couple more Japanese bookstores I haven't visited yet, also in that vicinity.

Kinokuniya is kind of expensive though... there are smaller manga stores in queens that sell both English and Japanese manga. Book off is the most convenient place though, I think.

Queens is too far to go if I'm on foot in mid-town Manhattan.

What's Asahiya like? I think it's in the same general area.

That is a bit farther on madison and ~45th street, I think it is about the same as kinokuniya in price, I havn't actually been there in a while.
