Japanese exchanging cell email addresses

Yes, I admit I may watch too many Jdramas. I've notieced a sub theme that reoccurs. The exchanging of cell phone email addresses. Is this really a big deal in the dating process in Japan, or am I reading too much into these shows?

Hey, if you have a phone/e-mail, don't YOU exchange the address/number with people you want to stay in contact with?
