Does Japan have capital punishment?
I would like to know if teacher's in public schools are allowed to "spank" the students if they misbehave. This is known as corporal punishment. I've heard that some japanese students have stabbed their teachers. This is of grave concern to me because I may have to teach these kids one day.
Do I have the right to disarm a student if he brandishes a knife? Also, in the accidental death of this student, would I be put in jail?
What I mean is: does japan have a death penalty for murder or manslaughter, (kid slaughter in my case)?
I am interested to know, because I will go there this year, and there exists a possibility of my being incarcerated.

I'm being pretty facetious with this post, so respond however you like. :p

all i know is that there is no "jury of peers", and that the serin gas attack people from like 10 years ago are still in the court system... i would guess that your chance of "staying living" is good (if you can handle the kid part).

Japan's death penalty is death by hanging.

They also have lethal injection and electric chair. I think the chair is the most common, but I'm not sure. As an aside, I'm predicting that the US army brat who just killed a woman in Kanagawa(?) is about to get a first hand look at Japanese corporal punishment.

The lethal injection and electric chair were what I was thinking they had. The hanging comes as a shock to me because it seems like an unmodern thing now or days, and Japan isn't really behind the times in anyway.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who contributed to this tread. I must say, where I live in spank town, capital punishment doesn't exist. It was abolished in the 1960's.
Does this mean, "throw a chair and things at them" or "throw them down into their chair"?
I would rather throw them out the window.
Also, you said that if a teacher responds with a deadly weapon, the teacher will be arrested. ouch!! But isn't this self defense?:o

Spank,
It means to throw a chair
Also, there are enough non-lethal defense weapons (mancatchers, etc) in a Japanese school, that if a teacher a) brought a lethal weapon and b) used said weapon on a student, that it would be highly suspect.

As you pointed out,Japanese court system takes too much time to close the case. So Ministry of Justice decided to institute New trial system.
New system is called 裁判員制度(citizen judge system) will go into effect by 2009 at the latest.
In principle, each case will be decided by three judges and six citizens. The citizens are called 裁判員(Saiban-inn).
The purpose of this system is swift judgment. It's hoped that each case will close within 3 days.
Spank, I've sent a advance notification about you to "Juvenile Problems Section in the Prime Minister's Office".
hehe.:D

Peh that military boy will hopefully get what he deserves either hanging or dieing by getting whipped to death.
Think of the japanese people who’s lives are endangered by the continuing freedom of this psychopath
.
that and I don't like seeing people getting away from justice because of some illegal contract
.
If it was only one of those two I wouldn't support it but by all means.
I know this is actually technically an old topic… as they have just implemented the citizen judges.
On one side I’m generally against the death penalty… but maybe pointing out a flaw like… what if,
hmm but hmm… If you think about it still going threw the trial system is also a punishment
.
And no it’s not self defence to kill someone
.
But when it comes to your specific case I don't know, of course I don't it’s your case how would I know if your guilty.
Your just another citizen.
Ah did we create a loop hole in the rules of the forum by any chance?
