Silk???

Post by Kisshu » Tue 02.07.2006 8:04 pm

I'm cosplaying in March and me and ma gramma are gonna sew a furisode for me to wear... I'M SO EXCITED!!!!! I've got a pretty accurate pattern.... (from a sewing store.. but I can't say how accurate it is....) adn I am gonna buy the material.. but when I went to the biggest fabric store near us, the only asian patterns they had were in brocade (feels like silk.) There were some Japanese looking patterns (cherry blossoms and such) but I am not sure that this is appropriate for my furisode....... is it?

And also... if its not, does anybody know of a website where I can buy 6 yds of Japanese material for under $60? ありがとうございます!!!!:D:D:D

I'd save the money and get the brocade. Remember this is for a cosplay so you won't be wearing it very often. Plus no one is going to be looking at you and thinking, "Hrmph, that's not real silk."

Well what I am not sure about is if the Japanese wear silk.. all the yukatas, kimonos, and furisode I've seen are in a more cottony fabric... so I'm not sure what to use!!
What cosplay are you all playing the TWO?
Well me and ma friend are just oging as Japanese ppl in general ^_____- she's getting a Japanese school uniform!

That's because the yukata is the functional equivalent of a bathrobe. We don't wear terrycloth suits. ;)

You wouldn't have to worry about spilling coffee on your suit anymore...

But anyway, silk should be just fine, especially in something more formal like a furisode.

And cherry blossom patterns are very ubiquitous here, so that should work just fine, too.
