There are usually 5 things that I learn before visiting another country.
1. Hello (konnichiwa)
2. Thank you (arigatou gozaimasu)
3. How much? (ikura desu ka)
4. numbers (http://sp.cis.iwate-u.ac.jp/sp/lesson/j/doc/numbers.html)
5. Where's the bathroom? (toire wa doko desu ka?)
These should get you quite a bit further than sakana!

You should learn more of the language before going to Japan than you would going to a lot of other countries because virtually no one at all speaks English.
