Are sports in Japan played favoring a tie?

I heard from a co worker that sports, baseball specifically, in Japan are played favoring a tie, rather than a win. I was just wondering if this was fact or fiction.

That is absolutely insane. The whole country virtually stops every year for the national HIGH SCHOOL baseball championships, played at Koshien Stadium. There are multi-million dollar businesses around Japan's several major league teams. You think that kind of attention would be focused on something that never had a winner?

EDIT: Plus, in baseball you can't have a tie. The game keeps going until someone wins.

Actually there are ties in Japanese professional baseball. They only play three extra innings at the most. If at the end of twelve innings the score is still tied, it's declared a draw.

But no, they don't play for a tie.

I remember walking into a McDonalds in Tokyo...they had the entire bracket for the High School championship on the wall. Not only that but it was also on the little paper sheet you get on the tray. I've never seen such devotion for HIGH SCHOOL baseball, you don't get that in England(even with footie;) ) it's all about the PremiershipB)

One of the tournaments the baseball team I play for participates in will only play one extra inning after a tie game. That inning, BTW, starts off with the leadoff and #2 hitters on third and second base (respectively) with one out and the #3 hitter at bat. If the score is still tied after that inning, the two teams line up and the 1 thru 9 hitters of both teams play rock paper scissors. Whoever has the most wins at that is declared the winner.

and if you don't think rock paper scissors is competetive, go to any school yard and watch them play it.. those kids get mighty upset if they lose.

The Seibu Lions and Soft Bank Hawks played to a tie last night. I hate ties in baseball.
