Is it true that the Japanese don't really like foreigners?

Post by Ren » Thu 09.14.2006 1:12 am

I've heard this so many times, I was just wondering if it was true. There must be alot of gaijin in Japan these days, so maybe that dislike was something of the past? Just wondering, thanks.

Big difference between "don't really like" and "hate".

I certainly never felt hated when I was there. I found the Japanese I met very friendly and welcoming.
Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there

Whoops, edited. I meant to put dislike, I wasn't thinking...

But back to the point, thanks for your input.

Your first impression to my response may be, "What does that have to do with anything?" I insist that it is the most relevant answer you will get.

Do you hate hammers?

Give it a minute and let it sink in. I promise you will not be disappointed.

There are Americans who hate foreigners. Why would let that stop you from going or doing something that you really want to do.

Maybe what Ezrach is trying to say is that everybody likes hammers, at least until they hit themselves on the thumb.

Or perhaps he's implying that foreigners attempting to "fit in" to Japanese society are really just banging their heads against the walls.

Then again, maybe he's just trying to say that the Japanese view foreigners as a bunch of tools.

Or maybe that they don't have an opinion at all?

When I heard the question, I thought, "I don't have any feelings towards hammers at all... " xD

Hammers don't want to be where they aren't appreciated.

There were some great insights into "the hammer" comment.

What I meant by it was that many Japanese have a goal (some people even bordering on obsession) to practice English, and you are as useful as a tool as any other.

So, Infidel was spot on. A Japanese student studying English says, "If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning...."

;)

Do all Japanese dislike all foreigners? No.
Do all Japanese like all foreigners? No.
Do some Japanese dislike all foreigners? I'm sure you could find such people, yes.
Do some Japanese like all foreigners? Yes, though such people are often shallow and annoying.
Do some Japanese like some foreigners and dislike others, and vice versa? Let's see, what would Homer Simpson say?
