I've never really seen/heard of any big problems with pickpocketing in Japan. The largest problems are (like Mike mentioned) drunk salery men who get picked on the trains, or who fall asleep outside of trainstations and wake up without their briefcase.

I have always had a personal rule of thumb when it comes to buying wallets. I don't pay any more for a wallet than the average amount of cash I carry in it. That means I normally have wallets that cost under 1000 yen.

But then wouldn't it be convenient for us to use credit cards than cash? We won't risk getting pickpocketed.

Just curious, do most people in Japan do funds transfer? I read Japan news occasionally and noticed that the banks charge extremely low interest rates for borrowing. Is there a market of people in investing in bonds, equities etc?
