YET ANOTHER...

I made up a word in my head and decided to look it up... which brought me to the Sociolinguistics page on Wikipedia which mentions your fellow Labov. So it looks like I'll need to add that book to my list. Unfortunately, I'm stuck in a northern Michigan town for work, and the local book store is probably lacking in books on the topic.

I'll look at picking it up on-line or pick it up downstate when I go to visit my family.

I still think I have a point buried in my ramblings somewhere, but I'll refrain from further debate until I have a little more education under my belt.
