It is a a DataMatrix code which is a two-dimensional matrix barcode.

Shouldn't that be 「これは何ですか」
"What is this?"

I think you meant to say

And to answer your original question I have no idea.

Two muffins were baking in an oven. One turns to the other and says "sure is hot in here." The other replies "AH TALKING MUFFIN!"

Am I wrong in thinking それは何ですか would suffice in this situation?

I guess it would work. "what is that?" seems logical along with "what is this?".

It is not "wrong" but to my way of thinking as the object in question was included in the post then "what is this?" is more correct. If the OP had included a link or some other way of directing us to the object in question then "what is that?" or even "what is that over there?" (あれは何ですか) would be more correct.

In this case we only use これ, because a speaker is indicating the object (= an image). (?)

I am also confused with "this" "that"and "it". ^^;

Unfortunately I don't have as much time to learn Japanese as I would like, and therefore I am rather inactive on this forum. Yet I have learnt so much just by reading the "Recent Posts" page every once in a while. I respect those who have taken the time to write up explanations to help others, especially those who have written in a language which is not their native language.

The picture is of a QR code: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code

QR codes are special barcodes that many Japanese cell phones can read. For instance, to automatically display the cell-phone version of a particular website on a cell phone, you hold your cell phone up to the QR code, and the page automatically loads without you having to type in the URL. This is why they're common on big Japanese websites nowadays.

These have become quite common in newspapers and magazines as well. By using these, advertisers are able to make their printed ads much simpler, smaller, and thus cheaper, giving only the most basic information. Someone who wants to know more, simply "snaps" the bar code and they are taken to the web site where they can get more details.

This also gives the advertisers the ability to update information (price changes, special deals, etc.) without having to print new ads. My family uses them quite often.

No, that works using a chip inside of the phone. The bar code reader uses the phone's camera to *read* the url, and then the phone connects to the internet.

The bar code in the OP took me to a Yahoo bulletin board.

Go to your local USPS post office and mail a small package (i.e. too big for a normal stamp, and too small for a full-size label). The mailing label will have a 2D barcode on it.
