As far as I remember, getting lost a lot and asking people directions; very good practice indeed.
Also, the desperate search for the person to meet at the subway station, because nobody could tell the way to the house.
I humbly recall though I had to plead to use a phone, because I was lost, lost, and had to explain a very nice lady with no english that I could not find her son. Now, I can just laugh about it, then, I felt awfully stupid...

If you're staying long enough to make use of the services and you have to call abroad using your cell, I reccomend au.. They have the student discount and a special discount program for calling abroad.. I don't remember what it's called off the top of my head, but it made international calling a lot cheaper.

Personally, I'd just tell Mom that the initial "s" in "mother" is silent.
