When I was in Tokyo, I saw loads of women with their hair lightened to a sortof mahogany colour. I can't remember if it was actually more popular than black, but definately very, very popular.

Well, considering that every single Japanese person who's ever lived was born with black hair, I don't think they'd consider it due cause to murder a person on first sight.
(Yes, black hair is popular.)

Actually, living up to the blond haired gaijin stereotype might attract a more dangerous crowd. Black hair is less likely to get you killed >=P

RE: Hair Colour In Japan
yeah I recently coloured my hair blackish here... I was really too afraid of all the attention by both the sexy women, and the foreign mafia here...
Since black is the born color, it is obviously a lot of people that has it. But when it comes to colouring, I have mainly noticed two colorings. One is the slightly reddishbrown one, and the other is a more light brown.
However if you go to harajuku or similar, you will always find lots of weird hairstyles, but hardly popular.

All Japanese people have very long hair, and it generaly stands in a tall spikey formation above their head. This hair varies in color, from jet black with blue highlights to bright gold to sky blue. It reacts to their moods, and never loses its sheen unless under water. Also, all hair turns gold and grows a few meters when power levels exceed 25,000.

Sometimes I think that I'm afraid of thinking, and that scares me.
