RE: Is english important?
He's using some sort of IP spoofing software. He'd already been IP-banned after the second ID, which wasn't even using the same IP (or even an IP from the same continent) as the first one.

Hm. A technologically sophisticated, immature troll.
Sad.

So how did you stop him last night? He had a third sock puppet signed up and ready to go, but he never posted with it or made another. Did you stop him or did he get bored and stop himself?

I only banned #1; #2 Clay took care of; I wasn't even aware of #3.
Edit: OK, I tracked down and banned account #3. Thanks for the heads up.

uhuh,
this is why banning is often so highly ineffective.
You tick people off, they'll come back and usually they are not in a better mood.
And Tony, you don't have to be technically sophisticated to pull that trick off...
even a relative computer illiterate like me can think of several ways to bypass an IP-ban.
This is just a kid, my guess is he'll get bored soon enough if we just laet him rant and simply ignore him (even though we'll miss that adrenaline rush of getting all worked up:))
Ban him again, and he'll be back for sure.
Oh well, that's just my humble opinion.
ahum, humble? Nah, I'm Dutch, I admit, I'm not humble ^_^

So are you suggesting just deleting his posts (his offensive ones -- bizarrely enough those anime clips he linked on YouTube both times were not offensive), but not actually banning the account?
Or are you saying you think we should leave his posts alone as well and just ignore anything from him? Cause I don't think you can get all the regular posters to just ignore the posts; it's human nature not to.

banning seems to discourage trolls more in the long run. They may get riled up, but only for a short time, then they get bored and seek attention elsewhere.
I'm just annoyed that his Japanese is better than mine.

if you have the time and effort you can thwart a forum troll by banning them and bouncing their future attempts to very strange websites. I do not know how to do this, but have heard it's the new way to repulse the repulsive twits out there. I think they call it "bouncing" or something like that.

He might possibly know more vocab, kanji and grammar, but since you actually know how to use the language and he doesn't, I would still consider your Japanese ability way above his.
Two muffins were baking in an oven. One turns to the other and says "sure is hot in here." The other replies "AH TALKING MUFFIN!"

Maybe it should be required to enter a valid email address when registering (with activation link) and if a specific email address is used for spam / trolling whatever a few times, it could be banned from the registration.

This might be a complicated approach, but you could make TJP's forums and invite only system. Then just open up the introductions section to guests and have people post there asking for membership. Once a member has been around long enough for admins to get to know them, they can be giving the rights to start inviting people.

RE: Is english important?
Why couldn't a troll ask very politely to get a membership in the introductions section and then wreak havoc in the other sections?
And there's something about the "invitation system" I'm not comfortable with. We're not a club after all, are we?

they could still get in, but it would be at a much slower rate. Actually, I think the bigger advantage would be it's possible to give advice to people before inviting them that most people seem to skip over in the FAQs based on what they say when they ask for membership. Either way, even I think the complexity of the system isn't worth the benefits of implementing it.
