RE: Garage Sales
In short, don't blame the smilies, blame the writer for not making the effort express appropriate feelings without them.

Hmm...I must memorize those rules and put them into practice.
And frankly some people here on the interweb machine are just too dumb to detect literary emphasis, so they rely on smilies...well, looks like we're all on the same page.

hairsenbon, i was actually being facetious. in both aspects. it's a circle of working hard, spending hard, playing hard, but with no real enjoyment from the experience. everything is expected, work, play, and money. the friends I knew in the marketplace, salaryman areas, were always worn out, undermotivated and underappreciated.
sorry if MY intent was lost in my little bit of tongue-in-cheek humor..
Sorry 'bout that. I didn't get the facetiousness, and have been working 34 hour days recently. Just kinda snapped. All's good =)

two_heads, those smilies could save you from a lot of misinterpreted posts!
Relying on smilies is nothing but intellectual laziness.
not always, sometimes aggresive cynicism and sarcasm come across as just being a jerk. While I don't mind being stern and bold, I don't like the stigma that comes along with being a jerk. therefore, smilies, in some cases can smooth over the problem with text in forums. You can't see my face or my general body language. Smilies become that body language. While I believe that some people use smilies way too much, I do also believe that there is a time and place for everything.
Expecting everyone to understand you tone of voice on forum chat is an expectation that is dfficult to realize.
