Discussing Shinto and Buddhism as practiced in Japan is on topic and OK. Getting into political and religious debates is what's off topic and likely to get thread locks.

Shinto is animistic if that is what you mean by "nature worship". It is also more about this world than preparing for some sort of reward in an "afterlife" as in non-pagan religions. As for Buddhism being neo-paganism, Siddhartha Gautama lived around 400 years before the birth of Jesus Christ.
