- think of it as reading practice.
To be fair to the OP, there are some part-time/student jobs which might be more common in different parts of the globe. The archetypal uni-student job in the UK is working at the pub, but the drinking age is higher in Japan and the US which presumably puts a stop to that, at least for the freshmen.
I worked as a bookie because it paid better than retail but in many places off-track betting isn't legal.
If you're talking high-school student jobs, I'm sure those suck just as much in Japan as they do everywhere else.
Anything unskilled, low-paid and requiring no real responsibility, generally. (I cleaned and babysat in NZ: I'm still amazed that people allowed my fifteen-year-old self sole care of their children, and what's more, paid me for it.)

Actually the OP is right -- schools have a lot more power in Japan to regulate their students' lives than US schools do. Schools in Japan are able to set rules about what the students can do outside of school (even on the weekends). Part time jobs are often a target of those rules.

Starbucks is seen as an American shop that attracts a lot of foreigners (which it does, actually). So, it's only natural for people who are interested in meeting and talking to foreign people to want to get a job there.
