Studying kanji

Ok well I'm new to this site so I'll be posting alot of questions right now so here's one.

I know all the jlpt level 4 kanji and few of the level 3 new kanji. Any site I go to has the kanji along with 4-6 combonation words and 3-7 readings!! So, what do you consider knowing a kanji, DO I memorize all this?! of just a few readings and translations? Please help!

Also since you need to be able to write the words you know how they'd really be written, such as:　いぬ　＝　ＤＯＧ
犬　 is how it's actually written. SO every new word I learn, I look up the way you'd see it actually written. Is this a good idea?

What you should be doing right now is working through a beginning textbook. Studying vocab and kanji in isolation is not a good study technique, especially at the beginning.
