Japanese movies...

Post by kohana » Wed 09.06.2006 12:26 am

Can anyone suggest enjoyable Japanese movies to watch? I'd just like to get more exposure to the language. :) I've noticed that whenever I watch movies/animated videos in foreign languages, I tend to pick up on them faster... ;) Thanks for your input.

Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there

And there's a brand new (as of this week!) remastered Criterion edition of Seven Samurai.

Yes, I bought it.

This is the *third* time I've bought a Seven Samurai DVD. :|

To name a couple:

Kamikaze Girls
Waterboys
Mayonaka No Yaji-san Kita-San
Oppureta Tanuki Hime
Happiness of the Katakuris

And I suggest getting a NicheFlix.com subscription (if you have a region free player) so that you can rent many of these movies yourself and be surprised at what might be some good ones. :)

You may consider watching Japanese dramas. You can easily bittorrent them. http://www.d-addicts.com is a good site to find torrents. Some good dramas are "Nobura wo Produce" and "Kurosagi".

Unlike a lot of fantasy movies and anime, realism dramas that deal with modern life tend to use more "real" language.

All Studio Ghibli movies are good too...
Except for ゲド戦記.
That was a crime to celluloid.

Ping Pong is great, and you can buy it in the states.

not sure how new it is, but Toho Master Collection has released a 2-disk set with the original uncut Japanese version of ゴジラ (on DVD for first time in North America according to package) and the US version "Godzilla, King of Monsters".

You mean ole' Raymond Burr is not in?

Wow.... I have to get that one.

(BTW, people, if you haven't seen the original Godzilla, check it out. It's totally NON camp, and serious as a heart attack. It's a good film.)

Ju-On is my favorite Japanese movie, the American remake sucks compared to this one.

Technically, The Grudge was the director remaking his own movie for english-speaking audiences, not an American remake... and there are some things about the one he made for english audiences that I actually liked better.

Summer Time Machine Blues!
Sometimes I think that I'm afraid of thinking, and that scares me.
