How do you learn Japanese? What's your tips?

Have a textbook or grammar book that you find particularly helpful? What about a learning tip to share with others?

According to you, I know 0 vocab words of Japanese because I have never memorized a word by repeating it in isolation, out loud.

I agree with Kitamichibi's way. It would actually work rather well, so I might use that method of thinking from now on and test it out.

I've originally started with learning all of Hiragana and Katakana.

Now I'm going through the Bertliz book, "Japanese in 30 Days", however my memory is pretty bad, so I'm not able to do it in 30 days.

I do believe the book is very well laid out and comes with an audio cd to get the feel of how to say it.
As you go through the book, you learn about 650-700 words, and it also steps you through learning hiragana and katakana as well (if you've already learned it, it's still good review), along with sentence structure.

Then once you learn how to say the words and spell it in romanji, it's easy to just transfer that to hirgana and katakana.
But of course out of all of it, practice is usually the key word. ;-)

That is correct. You know 0 words of vocab.

It's nice to be quoted accurately.

I don't know any Japanese words yet either, going by that standard. I suppose I really ought to buckle down and learn a few one of these days.

Neither Chris nor I have ever memorized words by repeating them in isolation, out loud. Therefore neither Chris nor I have ever memorized any Japanese words.

Of course, that is nonsense; we have memorized lots of Japanese words. We were using absurdity to illustrate absurdity.

Nah, Chris did that. You were just parroting him.

It's a useful thing to do if you're bored with nothing else to do. Like, say, at school, when you're done early or something. Might as well study when you have the opportunity.

Ken Proさん, you're being quite mean to Mikeさん...The point of the thread was for everyone to give their views on how they learn the language, so of course everyone would have different methods than you and different methods work for different people, there is no right/wrong method, there is only the "What works best for whoever", method... ;)

I completely agree with you. And also with Chris and Mike. I didn't mean, of course, that there was only one way, even though I used the word "only." My poor word choice was jumped on by Chris, and further jumped on by Mike. My responses to them are meant to be dryly humorous. I'd be curious to know their own methods of studying vocab, as they might be things I'd want to try. Perhaps they mentioned them previously in the thread, which I'd be happy to check. But my above notes to them are just fooling around. I'm assuming they have thick skins........but I mean no offense.

EDITED TO ADD: the real absurdity would be for me to second-guess Chris or Mike. They know a hell of a lot more about learning Japanese than I do!

Yeah, that would quickly ruin a good thread.

I try to find kids sites and things for younger people and I practice like a kid would with flash cards and by rewriting things. I started in September and quizzed myself on hiragana I can get 89/104 doing this and some things are just stuck in my head I just keep shoving stuff in until it falls out the otherside. :D

Could you plz give the web adress for these sites?
