welcome aboard :D

I don't mean to be rude, but I wanted to point out that when the "wa" used to indicate the subject of sentence is actually a "ha" (は), but is only pronounced as "wa" (and I have no idea why!).
just a small pointer for a beginner (from a beginner).

mata ne! (see ya later)

When I first started learning Japanese, I had a Japanese friend who helped me understand a lot. I would often ask her difficult questions. Eventually as my questions got better her answer pretty much became, "Because ancient Japanese said so..."

So, "Why is は wa?", "Because ancient Japanese said so..."

Ask Tony, he may know. ;)

Because the ancient Japanese said so. :p

Actually, in this case, that *is* the case. ;) -- in the old orthography, は could be pronounced /ha/ or /wa/ depending on its place in a word. For example, the word "river" -- now written かわ, used to be written かは.
