Good Japanese Movies

Post by hamsterfreak4evr » Fri 01.27.2006 10:32 pm

I'm going to the Japanese video store tomorrow, in hopes of finding of good movies to help me understand things like pronounciation and such better. Does anyone have any good suggestions? I've already seen one of the Hamutaro Movies and it was really funny and cute, so I was wondering what other ones people know about. (Also, what's the Japanese name of "The Grudge"?):D

Ju-on is The Grudge.

As for me, I really loved Kikujiro and Adrenaline Drive.
And Samurai Fiction. That's got to be one of the greatest films I've ever seen.
"Kakkoiiiiii!" Haha.

As for films to stay away from:

2LDK = two girls just beating each other to death. Stupid.
Suicide Club = A potentially interesting plot lost to just weirdness and tons of gore.

Look for any film by Itami Juzo (e.g., "Tampopo," "The Funeral," or "A Taxing Woman"). Most video stores should probably have them in the foreign section. Netflix surely does.

Nice light comedies with real day-to-day people in some... er, interesting circumstances.

MAybe too late to assist this time around, but Miyazaki movies are always good. Often they are designed for children but they are great for adults too and they have English subtitles which is a bonus.

As an English teacher I always suggest watchin a scene two or three times.
First time you should get the general idea of the scene second time you should try to get any new vocab and third time you should watch without subtitles and test your listening ability.

Good luck with the movies.
