Yasushi Inoue is a major figure in 20th-century Japanese literature, up there with Mishima, Tanizaki, Akutagawa, you name it. He's been widely translated into many European languages (French, German, etc.), but hardly at all into English.
Why is this? I'm reading his あすなろ物語 right now, and it's fantastic. I wanted to recommend a translation for my mother to read, but couldn't find any. What's up with this?
