Anyone read a Japanese novel entitled 'Out'?

Post by Grit » Sat 09.16.2006 12:34 am

Topic. It's a novel by an author named Natsuo Kirino (IME is off the computer here), and I surprisingly liked it. Long story short: I only perused it in order to pass time one day and ended up reading the whole thing. These days I hardly ever read (outside of reference or informative reading), that's why there's a surprisingly up there.

Anyways, just curious.

And it goes without saying, I read the translation...

Yes, I've read it.

I definitely enjoyed it, although I remember being taken a bit off gaurd by the sudden introduction of the whole weird-yakuza-sex-fixation subplot. Not something you see in American books. Unless I've been reading the wrong American books. :-p

I haven't read the book, but I saw the drama with Iijima Naoko and Tanaka Misako. I thought it was an amazingly complex psychological drama (especially for Japan, where most drama are all too ベタ). It seemed to start going off the rails toward the end, but even then had a few powerful surprises. I remember being disappointed with the final episode, but then, when you have such a complex middle, it's hard to bring things to an end satisfactorily.

If you enjoyed OUT, you might want to read some other book by Natsuo Kirino; there is one I enjoyed even more than OUT, though quite different, whose title in japanese is "yawarakana hoho" according to the french translation I read. "disparitions", (disappearances) a weird story of rememberance and backward journey in Hokkaido. Sorry I don't know the english title.

Read it in translation and also have the Japanese text to help learn Japanese. She's a pretty popular mystery writer in Japan and I wish more of her works were translated. Hopefully I'll learn enough Japanese to be able to read them in the original before I die :-)
For another good read: In The Miso Soup by Murakami Ryuu.

Oh, by the way, another of her novels is coming out in translation - Grotesque.

I'm just about halfway through Out (the English translation) and am quite enjoying it. Well, as much as one can "enjoy" such a novel ;). I feel like I'm getting a good picture of who these characters are, and that's always a big draw for me when reading a novel. Thanks for posting recommendations by this author and others.

Sorry for necro-posting but this thread was still on the upper half of the first page, so even though the thread itself is old I didn't think it was necessary to make a new or separate thread.

I've read both Out and Grotesque (in english). I really enjoyed them - out more than grotesque- but they are very different to anything ive read before, extemely dark and disturbing. Is that style common in japanese writing, or just with that author?

I did like this one. If you liked Out you might also enjoy The Devil's Whisper, which is another good one (also available in English).

(Hope this isn't too necro).

I think it adds to the discussion. I have The Devil's Whisper but haven't sat down to read it. I'll put it back on my reading list.

Thanks...

I am not going to say The Devil's Whisper is life-changing...but neither was Out.

I liked Devil's whisper. In fact I love almost every Miyabe Miyuki book I've read. As you say, they're not great literature, but they're certainly a fun read. I was very surprised to learn that she also did a children's book "Brave Story". I haven't read that yet, but it's on my ever-growing list of books-to-read.

Really? I was actually rather interested in seeing the movie version of that which came out last summer.
Maybe I'll go pick up the book then. I've been looking for something good to read recently, as I got bored rereading snow-crash (the JP version isn't the greatest).
