Johnny Be Good on shamisen
In Oz we have a music quiz show called "Spicks and Specks" (after the Brothers Gibb song). Some episodes they have a segment where music to well know songs is "produced" in a way that makes the song difficult to identify. Recently they had a shamisen player, Noriko Tadano, play an aria from Madame Butterfly, Baby Face, Man I Feel Like A Woman, What's My Scene and Six Months in A Leaky Boat.
At the end of the show she played Johnny Be Good accompanied by Dave Faulkner on guitar. There is a clip of that on youtube.
You can listen to Noriko play a number of different styles on her myspace page.

Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there

Thanks for the links.
The shamisen is a bit of an acquired taste that I'm still working on, but good stuff.

I have to say... My favorite shamisen crossover music is still "Smoke on the Water"
This guy is fun. You like Star Wars? How about Indiana Jones? or maybe some AC/DC...

I think the best song _ever_ is the "girl from ipanema", so here you go, shamisen

I have always said "The Japanese can take the fun out of anything", but every now and then something like this comes along.
Never underestimate my capacity for pettiness.

Thanks Tony-san, that is brilliant.

Acca Dacca played here last week and it didn't sound quite like that, even from a kilometre away.

Some of the most painful parties I ever went to were in Japan, yeah. Nothing like relentless adherence to a schedule to suck the fun and life out of an evening of drinking and games.
