Wow... I'd love to find out if those get confirmed!

We've had something kind of like that happen around here...

We're still waiting on more evidence etc. ;)

I think I'd rather have kangaroos hopping around than large predatory cats. ;)

(Oh, and some friends of my dad's from the bait shop where he stops for coffee in the morning caught a large piranha in the lake by our parents house! People would have them as pets and release them into the lake, and they would survive the winters by staying in the warm water outlets from the power plant on the north side of the lake. The one caught was over a foot long! My dad has a picture of him holding it put up on their kitchen cupboard.)

Can kangaroos live through the winter? They look pretty hardy and some seem to have good coats of fur...

Yeah, kangaroo fur is pretty thick and keeps them snug and warm :) They don't live in the snowy mountains, but stay on the plains. They find caves etc for shelter in the winter. Their activity slows in the winter (but don't we all?!)..

I find it hard to believe your piranha story, BTW!!

There's a mention of one in one of the official DNR reports.

http://conservationreport.com/2008/07/1 ... mment-6174

A whole discussion about some of the ones caught right in Muskegon lake (the lake I grew up on) in the comments of another article... (the article itself being another matter entirely that I don't agree with, just like the disclaimer at the top of the article)

http://www.macombdaily.com/articles/200 ... chive3.txt

Another article...

http://bucsfishingreport.com/blog/weblo ... _michigan/

It happens. :( People toss them in the lake and they live just like bluegills etc. They can survive by staying in the hot water hole for the winter... and very large ones have been caught that way. Fortunately they are generally not a threat alone, only in larger numbers.

..... Kangaroos are on show at many Japanese zoos and are able to be imported by individuals. ......

Sounds as if they may have escaped or been released by a private "collector". If a breeding pair escaped or was released into the wild it wouldn't take long for their numbers to increase given there is plenty of feed about in summer. The population here explodes after good rains which, unlike Australia, Japan receives every year. Winter would be tough on them though.
Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there
