The Day After Tomorrow

I'm watching the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" starring Dennis Quaid. It just got done with the scene in which there was a storm that sent massive hail falling over Japan. I have a question about that scene. Was that actually Japanese they were speaking? Because a lot of it didn't sound like Japanese to me. The last line, I could tell was Japanese. With the wife on the phone "Moshi moshi, Taka? Daijobu? Taka?". But everything else didn't sound like it. I don't know, maybe I just wasn't listening properly. I didn't get much sleep last night. Can anyone clear this up for me?

It was japanese, but it was spoken in a really weird accent. My wife and I could have sworn they were Chinese people speaking Japanese, but when we checked IMDB, they were all credited with Japanese names.

Also the fact that the scene was not a typical Japanese scene was kinda off-setting (people fighting with police outside of chinese-style ramen-shops).

I dont know if this is true, but my teacher told us that country folkes say Chigau as "chiou!" sounds funny

i remeber when i was in band (played the sax) we had to play some music from that movie. i had no idea what the movie was about (i didn't watch it) while everyone around me was like "Oh yay i saw that movie!"
the music was cool..... after we got it down perfectly....
