I got my university/college results back...

well its only the first year (sophmore year??) and i know they dont count for anything but i got a 2:1!!! thats amazing for me since im a serious underacheiver. i dont ever revise (well i really did try for this one) and im so happy with my result. it wasn't even a low 2:1! i was 4% off a first! beleive me when i say im shocked and estactically happy i had to share with the world and i somehow managed to get 75% on my maths module....funny how i managed to pass the first half exam with only 41% (very narrowly passed) and i didnt know how to even do basic trig before the start of the year. Shows what you can do if you put your mind to it eh?

おめでとうございます。That would be "freshman year", though - sophomores are in their second year of high school/college, after which they become juniors and finally seniors.

I have no idea what a 2:1 is. And I don't see how you can pass with a 40%.

lol thanks everyone. and i think it is a british thing. 2:1 is equivalent to a B i suppose. I don't know how american Higher Education works. 40=>% is just a P for pass. doesnt contribute anything to your final grade. kinda like a stop gate to make sure your up to date with your knowledge thats going to be used in the next semesters.

We generally go by points. For example chemistry 1 may have 680 points. All homework, quizes, and tests you do have a set number of points. They take the number of points you earned divided by the number possible and get a percentage. Generally, its...

90%+ = A
80-89 = B
70-79 = C
60-69 = D
0-59 = F

Thats the basic definition, the school can always do minor changes.

what university/college are you at?

Iam teaching japanese at a highschool in oregon (usa) and our grads go like this
94%+=A
91-93=A-
89-90=B+
86-89=B (must take summer school to go onto my fourth year class)
82-85=B- (must take summer school to go on to third year)
79-81=C+ (must take summer school to go onto second year class)
76-80=C ( Fails any of my classes)
72-75=C-
bellow 72= fail any class

The grade split is bellow
tests=25%
final=25%
homework=35%
participation=15%

Tking summer school twice means they cant go any further into my classes.
I have a nice little system, about 300 kids sign up for japanese 1 and i end up teaching about 12 kids in japanese 4

ashitaka - a bit offtopic but, since i've been witnessing subtle changes towards this direction in our tech.colleges/unis here, would you estimate there are students that intend and are capable of completing all 4 years, yet have had to take summer school twice and have failed due to that?

Actually very few of my students go to summer school twice. so far it has happened twice. It was a twin brothers who were actually forced into my class by their parents and i gave them both passes so their GPA wasn't affected but the still got credits. I believe they took german classes after that and both were top in their class.

So basically no one has had to take summer school twice.
Most of my students drop out because i have a sign on my door saying i dont like anime. these students drop out in the first week so they dont have a "F" or lose a credit.
Basically people just drop out because my first lesson is how japan is not an anime world. I need my otaku students to drop out or my classes would have about 50 students in them.

I have actually only failed about 13 kids and they got on track afteer the first summer session.

That seems like a very low C, its in our fail range.
