If TJP were a family...

Post by Hatori » Sat 10.06.2007 6:04 pm

Hello! Anyway, out of the blue, I just thought:
If our regs here were a family, what would each member be and why?
I always see on all of my "degrading" websites I'm a part of that everybody is part of a website family and I'm wonder who would be what here. :p

EDIT: Okay, now I've had enough with grammar talk. I changed the thread title to be correct. :p

I'd be the annoying uncle who wanted to know why you misused the subjunctive mood in the thread title but got it right in your post.

Consistency, hobgoblins, little minds, etc.
Never underestimate my capacity for pettiness.

I would be the quiet cousin you know exists, but who you don't see too often.

You've made me lose confidence in my grammar. Try as hard as I can, I don't see the grammatic error in the thread title.

If TJP was a family->If TJP were a family

Couldn't you view TJP as the site itself, rather than a collection of people? I guess it would be more accurate in that case to say "if TJP users were a family," but still...

I think it's clear that I would be the patriarch of the family, guiding it with a stern but benevolent hand. I'm sorry... Clay you said? Who is that?

The subjunctive mood uses "were" for all persons and numbers. (Though it has mostly fallen out of use these days, and been replaced by the simple past.)

For example:
If I were to ask you if you think I have used the subjunctive correctly, how would you answer?

I guess the people that frequent the chat would be the distant cousins (from the side of the family opposite of Valatunda) that are anything but quiet, but don't pop in too often.

Its not just "british english" you don't write "If TJP was a family" you write it as were. You can say "was" though. There's differences in how you write and speak.
