Getting one of the PS3 Madden games is probably spot on based on what you've told us. There's a pretty big backlog of PS3 games now so you have a ton of other genres to choose from, too, if you know what other games he likes. If he likes RPGs, you could go with Oblivion.

Personally, I think Sony is a big evil giant so I don't buy their crap to begin with.

I hate sports games, so my opinion is probably useless, but I had a -lot- of fun with Gundam Musou 2 in Japanese.
