Why did TJP choose to use phpBB for the Forum?

Because it's the best free forum software available?
vBulletin was the only real competitor, and that is $180 up front and an additional $60/yr for updates etc.
I personally don't care for proprietary solutions with ongoing costs when a free solution works fine.

That and it was the only major forum that had an integration script with Drupal. Well, turned out to not integrate very easily... But in the end it worked out.

Truthfully I like this forum setup a bit better than vBulletin for some reason.
