大きな違いはなくて、意味は殆ど同じです。

Maybe the grammarians can find a good explanation for it, but my guess is 'the' is used to stress there is only one way the 'cool' people do things.

But "it's the thing to do" is heard pretty often.

NO grammarian here, but the emphasis in on "the" and in this case it is the only way to do something. you can substitue "the thing to do" with the actual "thing." For example.. because blowing smoke rings is awesome. the "thing" here is blowing smoke rings..

もっと詳しく説明すると、"that" がさしている動作や行為はもう過去に行われていたから"helped"が過去形になっていますが、結果はまだ出ていないので、まだ "hope"（〜だといいね） のままですね。

特にどこに引っかかっていますか？ hope の後に過去形がくるのは珍しくないと思いますが。

等々とよく使われるパターンです。

でも、よく使われているということであれば、今まで聞いたことや、見たことがないだけですね。

とは、文法的に違う。

I hope ....(過去形)　などの場合には、「おこなった結果がわからない」けれど、そうだといいという意味です。

No. You could say "He is angry, isn't he?"

He does look angry - O
He is look angry - X

Isn't he もありえるときいたので、確認してみました。
