Ask for ordinal number

Post by Kamwah » Sun 05.31.2015 10:52 am

My native language is Chinese. I'm learning both English and Japanese.

I have a question about English. There are some question words (i.e. which, how, who, etc...) are used for question sentence. I want to know how to ask for ordinal number?

For example:
Obama is the _??_th president of the United States.

How to change this sentence into a question sentence?

Hi Kamwah,

"Is Obama the (??th) president of the United States?"

If you want make it a question without suggesting a number, you have no choice but to ask something like "What number president is Obama?" which sounds a bit awkward, but in truth there aren't convenient ways to phrase this as there are in Japanese (何番目) or presumably Chinese.
