"stationary phone" や "landline phone" は間違っていないけど、専門用語みたいです。

This isn't the first time I've heard this question, so I figure maybe to help alleviate confusion, I'd address what a landline is. I can't read all the Japanese replies, so if it's already been explained, I'm sorry!

"Landline" is typically airline jargon for a telephone number at your destination at which you can be reached in case of rescheduling.

So any Japanese traveling to the US would probably be asked to provide a landline. I would presume this causes the "home phone" confusion. Maybe landline is used in other industries, but I used to work for American Airlines reservations, so that's my experience with it.

I saw an example in a grammar book which is written in Japanese and edited by American below.

Mobile phone are not as reliable as landline phones.

I thought it compared wireless phones with surface cable phones. That reminded of me if it is a conventional phone at home, how I should call it in English. So I asked it here. Thanks for your explanation.

Pay for a meal って金を払って、食事(meal)をもらうんです。
Pay for the rent って金を払っても、rent はもらいませんよ。

つまり、Pay a/the bill など、金を払う必要があるけど、具体的に「何か」をもらうことは述べていません。

まあ、ちょっと変な日本語になったと思うけど、分かりますか。

paul_bさんの説明をきいてから、わかりました。日本語で言えば、代金を支払う場合にはforがいるんですね。

料金、費（用）、金額を支払うときは、いらないということですね。

ここにある、onがどういう意味かわかりません。

手作りのジンジャーブレッドハウス。そうか、この２、３週間ずっと上の部屋でせっせと作っていたのがそれか！

次の例文を見てください。

Q. What have you been working on?
A. (I have been working on) A gingerbread house.

Q. What have you been doing?
A. I have been making a gingerbread house.

"working" の場合、何かの対象が要ります。「on」がその対象を指す言葉です。

質問に「working on」や「toiling away on」があるとき、答えはその対象だけでいいです。「doing」や「up to」では答えは動詞もいります。

間違いとまでは言えないけど、あまり使われてないでしょう。
