Hey guys,

I'm using the Genki textbook, specifically the first volume. I think it's the second edition. Anyway, on page 308, there's a bit of kanji reading practice (section 11b) that has the sentence ”近所ですぬ”. I translate this to mean "it's a neighborhood, right?" except that doesn't really make sense to me. It's referring to 川口市, which is a city. Why would anyone say something like "it's a neighborhood"? I guess I just don't understand the context. Any ideas?

Ah, I think I see. So the speaker was just saying that the city was nearby?

Well, to be honest I'm not sure what exactly they say in your book, but I'm guessing its some kind of conversation/roleplay right? In that case I'd assume so yeah, something like 'around these parts'

My first-thought translation if I saw that would be, "It's in the neighborhood [of -], isn't it?"

When speaking of towns or cities, I don't think it'd be unusual English to say something like, "Woodland? Isn't that in the neighborhood of Davis?" (except that "vicinity" would probably be a bit more common a term).

When no other locations are mentioned, it normally means the vicinity of the speaker's home.
