Genki 2- many kanji for non-vocabular words?

So Genki 2. It's going great and all, but unlike Genki 1, I actually have an issue with it.

Why is it teaching me kanji for vocabulary that hasn't been introduced in any of the lessons yet . In Genki 1, there was maybe 1 kanji given that I had to learn a new word for to use.

But in Genki 2, FIVE of the kanji (that's over 30%) in the very first lesson are words that haven't appeared anywhere in Genki yet. And yet, there are many kanji for many pre-existing words that we have yet to learn.

What gives?
