I'm really curious and would like to know why the small finger 指 means boyfriend/girlfriend in Japanese?

It doesn't mean boyfriend.
Never underestimate my capacity for pettiness.

The small finger (pinky is it?) when shown to a man relates to a girlfriend or woman one is playing with.
Contrary, the thumb when shown to a woman relates to a man.
