my name is.
My name is Justin and I don't know if I should make a Japanese equivalent or if I should just pick a Japanese name. What do you think?

You should use your own name written in Japanese.

The urge to choose a Japanese name or to render one's own name in kanji is asinine, universal, and perfectly harmless. It is a phase that practically no one has ever avoided, so go ahead and pick one and have fun with it. At some point you'll get over it, look back on it, and chuckle. But in the meantime....enjoy. It's part of the learning Japanese experience.

Aw, dude, I never made myself a Japanese name. I think I'm going to do that now, just for the fun of it, so tomorrow I can look back and chuckle too. ^_^''
Edit - That was pretty easy. The family name is from my nick-name (Nessa) and the fact that I just am hot sand. xD The first name is just because it's my favorite Japanese name (the kanji mean spring-beauty, which I love, and Harumi just sounds so pretty ^_^'')
Harumi Nessa - 熱砂 春美
Plus, I already know how to write these characters from memory, which is definitely sweet ^_^

I agree with Cash... Just go ahead and pick a couple of random kanjis which you think look cool (but have no idea of the meaning) and write them down everywhere.
Later on in life you'll see it written on a notebook and you'll be amused, mesmerized, and a little bashful at the fact. (kinda like when you remember your first kiss).
edit: I couldn't resist to choose one... so I chose 爆発 肉食 (bakuhatsu nikushoku)... it sounds manly and slightly intelectual doesn't it?

This is the first time I've ever heard Mike be supportive of kanji names for foreigners. Ever.
Justin, if/when you do make a name for yourself out of kanji, just keep in mind that you won't be able to use it with any Japanese people. Of course if someone asks you "Do you have kanji for your name?" you can show them, but you can't sign your name that way on any official documents, and most likely no one will be able to read it without you telling them what it says (if you choose kanji to match the sounds of your real name, that is)

It's the same opinion he's expressed about the topic on s.l.j. for years.
I once figured that if I ever had the money and inclination, I'd get a hanko made up of the characters 雷矢 - raiya - thunder/lightning arrow. I thought it was pretty cool. Recently when I joked about it to some of my sempai in the martial art I study, they suggested I should make it 雷也, which I admit, is even cooler.

Keats must have glossed over the word "asinine" in my post.
It's stupid, but it doesn't hurt anybody. So long as it isn't hurting anybody and it's fun, why not?

Once in Manila to get past the local gate guards and back into the port area instead of my military ID card I showed a wallet-sized photo of my grandmother. They waved me through.

I don't mean for writing I mean for pronunciation, how would I pronounce my name in Japanese? Also I thought of this after I had posted, but my last name is Gibbons(like the monkey) how might that be pronounced?

Wouldn't ギボンズ render it more closely? The double-B isn't particularly lengthened or stressed in English.

I'm also favoring ジャステン over ジャスティン
