Japanese Equivalent to a Spelling Bee

Postby torgosaves » Thu 09.22.2005 10:23 pm

I was wondering what the Japanese would have instead of a spelling bee, since it would be pretty easy to spell out words (because words are spelled how they sound). Do they have some sort of Kanji-Bee or something.

I can't say I've heard of 'spelling bees' in Japan, but I do know that speech contests (in Japanese and in English) are very popular/common. (I got to judge a few while I lived there. XD )

wat u tlk bout? on z intarweb, we all b speeling korrectly!

In some seriousness, while there are no spelling bees like we have, there are kanji quiz games, tests, etc.

One that I saw on TV (besides just giving the reading of obscure kanji) is to find all the kanji that can be pronounced a certain way. So they give something like たん and say to write 15 kanji that can be pronounced that way.
