Are there Vegan Friendly Japanese Calligraphy Sets?

Postby celticflower » Fri 09.02.2011 1:04 am

Hello

I’m interested in a beginner’s Japanese calligraphy set, but don’t want to use anything with animal ingredients. Can anyone recommend a brush that doesn’t use animal hair? I’d like an actual brush if possible.

And what about the ink stick? I’ve read that they use glue, but again the stick is recommended over the ink pot for the flow and effect on the rice paper.

As far as I can tell the rice paper is fine, but if it’s not please let me know.
While I was trying to look up how it’s made I was given this blog in the results http://alessandra-veganblog.blogspot.co ... l/Japanese The Japanese rice balls with pickled plums sound nice!

I’m beginning to think that I’ll have to cobble something together from other sources to try for a similar effect. Any suggestions? It’s just for personal use, but as I don’t know much about the tools used I’m not sure what’s required.

I was wondering if synthetic watercolour brushes might be a start, something like http://www.saa.co.uk/artsupplies/da-vin ... 79220.html

Not sure about a substitute for ink, watercolour seems too weak, but what about watered down acrylic paint? Would that be a comparable consistency?

I would’ve really liked a ‘proper’ set, there’s some beautiful ones out there *sigh*

I’m hungry :eyebrows: , so thanks for your time and talk to you later!

Well I post irrelevant stuff all the time when I de-lurk, so I suppose that’s only fair lol :P

I think it’s a valid question, but maybe if I want to investigate further I should try an art or specialised forum where there’s more chance of finding someone who knows the ins and outs of the subject.

Thanks for the reply anyway :)
