My Senior Research Paper! @_@

Postby TokyoScarab » Thu 10.13.2005 7:55 am

Konnichi wa minna! In my school before we can graduate from high school, we must first do a 'senior research paper', and I am doing mine on the japanese language (history, writting, use today, etc). Before you can start research, you must see how much info you can auctually find on the subject, and then get a teacher's approval. I got approval, but he said that I might want to focus on the Japanese culture and include a section on the language, but if I think I can make a paper out of the language than do that. So my question to you is, what shoud I choose?
And I try
I try to reason why
Don’t you know I can’t go on this way
Baby please don’t walk away there is this place
Where I toss away my pride
So you can see that I’m the one
To take you to a higher place this time

culture and language go hand in hand so it is hard to just focus on one rather than the other, perhaps concentrating on the culture and using the language to back up your points...

show how the language is moulded by the culture and the culture is reflected in its language, like multiple words for the same thing depending on the level of politeness and honour?

How about:

日本人: おお!日本語が上手ですね。

I'd narrow down the culture part. It is pretty expansive and probably ultimately more interesting than the language part. An interesting topic would be the effect of the Meiji Restoration on the Japanese culture. Or the effects of the U.S. occupation an Japanese culture. Or the improtance of rice to the Japanese diet. Etc.

I deeply thank you for your time to help me with such an important decision! B) After reading your posts, I think I will go with culture because I can make my presentation of my paper more important with iro-iro na props that I can buy or have my pen-pal send me some stuff from Japan, or help me out with some stuff. The only problem I think I will have is finding pretty much everything on the culture (there is so much!) I know alot about the culture already, but I would like it if you guys could post all the culture ideas you can, I would greatly appericiate it:) !!!!

A paper on the language alone could certainly be done, but it would be very, very dry.

Unless you did a paper on Kanji - you could go into the different types of kanji (ideograms, pictograms, etc.), talk about the history and transmission to Japan, etc. Props would look cool, too.

If you want to do a cultural paper, though, there's plenty of neat things to research:

Religion= Shinto, Buddhism, or both - there's also plenty of "New Religions" here in Japan that you could talk about (and they're not all bad like Aum Shinrikyou)

Art= Pottery, Sumi-e (ink paintings), Ukiyo-e (woodblock prints - just avoid Shunga, the pornographic ones :o), Poetry (not only Haiku, but Tanka, Renga, and others), Japanese tattooing, Tea Ceremony, Calligraphy, Modern art (painting, photography, dance), traditional theater (Noh, Kabuki, Bunraku)

History= Ancient history (the creation of Japan as a nation), the Middle Ages (lots of bloody wars), the Edo Period (peaceful, but the samurai's heyday), Meiji-Showa (modernization and WWII)

Pop art= Jpop, Manga, Anime, Video Game culture, Otaku culture, Japanese Film (classic artists like Kurosawa or Ozu, or more modern ones like Itami Juzo or Beat Takeshi)

-----

These are just the ones that come to mind. You could easily write pages and pages about these topics, so I would just try to find one that I'm passionate about and let it go from there.

Good luck!
