Which words you learn are important too. The key is to not overload your brain with too much information at once. No one, no matter how intelligent, cannot handle massive amounts of new information at the same time. Learn words that are at your level of learning (ie. if you're a beginner, don't worry about 整う and 植林, focus on words like 鳥 and 日), and don't try to learn too many words at the same time. 5-10 a day sounds good, but if you're doing more than one study session a day, you could easily make that 20 or even 30 if the study sessions are far enough apart (in time).

Make sure you review a LOT. People forget new pieces of information about five times on average before they really get stuck in your head.
Ist das einen Kanji, dass ich gefunden habe??

My idea with all this stuff is to overload myself. Attempt to learn more than you possibly can and what you retain is good, you just have to study extra on those you don't. to test yourself start lists of english to japanese translations, but keep them in 2 spots. then test yourself only looking at one list or the other, this way you know what you are truely retaining and not just reminding yourself right before you test yourself. remember, no reason to cheat on this stuff, it only cheats yourself.

Unless you only want to learn to speak Japanese, I think you should start leaning hiragana, before you begin anything else.

The amount of words is different from person to person. Some persons can learn 20 words a day, some can learn 5. You just have to figure out what suits you.

As Dai-san already said this is very different from person to person.

I have actually studied 20 words a day in a period, it did go but it was alot of stress. So now I only study about 5 words a day, but also some kanjis and grammar.

The most important is to find a studymethod that suits you :)
Hope you find it :)

I know it is person by person, but I just study more than what is retainable, but I keep this in mind and when I cant score 100% on my quizzes, oh well, I still did 85-95% which is still very good IMHO. The closest I come to stressing is when I miss something that has been coming up for days and that I have already gotten correct over and over and I just blank on it:@. As far as learning kana...I would say to take everything you have already learned in romaji and "translate" it into kana, and never look back at the romaji.

Kana is the native writing system. Hiragana and katakana are the two forms of kana. Romaji is the Latin alphabet.

A mixture of hiragana and kanji, with katakana thrown in for foreign loan words for good measure.

Start with Hiragana, thats what I did, but some people like to start with Katakana, though I still have found knowing hiragana most useful for a beginner.

When it comes to study grammar there are several ways to do it i guess. I study grammer and stuff with Dai-san, and we often study the grammar using it in sentenses, and testing eachother.

But in this case also, you have to find a way that suits you ^_^ Getting tierd of hearning that now :p ?

Isn't there a FAQ here somewhere that has all this, along with answers to all those "what do I start with" questions?
