IME and ゐ/ゑ and some "little" problems

Postby tanuki » Fri 01.20.2006 1:53 pm

Hello!

Could you please tell me how to write the ゐ and ゑ characters with the Japanese IME? (and also ヰ and ヱ)

And also: I've seen that these letters exist: ぅ/ゥ, ゎ /ヮ (little う/ウ, わ/ワ). What are they for? I don't know any words that use these letters...

Thanks a lot in advance! Bye!

I dont know how to type ゐ and ゑ with the IME but I do know about the small hiragana/katakana
They are used to make more sounds than normally used in Japanese.
For example:
ファ-Fa (Fu + small a)
To type the small vowels and wa, you type an x before it
For example:
x+e=ぇ
Sometimes they are used to elongate a sound.
For example:
ねぇぇ

ゐ = i
ゑ = e
you have to press the space bar several times to type them.

try:

xwe -> ゑヱ
xwi -> ゐヰ

They're rather like the thorn, edh, and yogh, which aren't part of our active alphabet, but which still show up in printing of old texts.

For the record, though, any Japanese text printed before 1945 will include them, so they're not THAT obsolete.

I agree with Tony. There's a bridge on the way to the bookstore near my apartment with a giant ゑ on it (all the bridges around here have the bridge's name carved into them). I forget the full name of the bridge.

I see them used in slang words and in 擬声語・擬態語 (sound/emotion words) in manga.

May I also ask about your sig, tanuki??

狸先生, entschuldige bitte, dass ich deinen Spitznamen geklaut habe, aber ich finde ihn so geil! Waschbären sind ja der absolute Hammer!

"Absolute hammer"??

To add to Tony's comment, just recently, Jan 10, here in Kyoto and Osaka we had a festival called the Touka Ebisu, or Ebessan festival, to pray for luck in business and finance in the new year. All the banners and posters I saw spelled Ebessan as ゑべっさん, which I gather is the traditional spelling before ゑ and ゐ were removed from official use. In this case, I guess they use the older spelling out of tradition. So while these letters are rare now, you can still expect to come across them occasionally.

As others mentioned, ゐ and ゑ are wi and we in the hiragana charts, but were officially eliminated, I believe because they were pronounced exactly the same as い and え.

Thanks a lot, you guys! I was already aware that ゑ and ゐ are obsolete, I just wanted to know how to type them.

I see them used in slang words and in 擬声語・擬態語 (sound/emotion words) in manga.

Genau!

Wieso?
