On and Kun?...

Ok, well my let's learn Kanji book (part of the japanese for busy people series) explains On and Kun readings a little but I still don't understand it. Ok when we have one kanji on its own in a sentance you use the Kun reading and when two or more ar together its usualy On... Aparently... But it then goes on to say that that's not always the case. And also some readings dont have On readings etc etc. It's all very confusing...
