Do Japanese like cheese ?

Postby crowfeather » Tue 08.08.2006 7:18 pm

I read that most Chinese people do not eat cheese. Now I wonder if many Japanese people eat or like cheese? Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think the Japanese consume many dairy products

You have to remeber too that it's pretty much impossible to make such general comments, as I do know plenty of Japanese who like cheese (really any dairy product for that matter), but compaired to things here in the US, yes, I would say that most Japanese consume quite a bit less dairy products.

I had a really tasty cheese ice cream cone when in Hokkaido. It tasted a bit like cheesecake.

Well, I know a lot of black people who hate cheese. Take my friend for instance. He says it reminds him of the chunky stuff in spoiled milk :p

RE: Blue Cheese

Postby Ihatehippies » Tue 08.08.2006 11:14 pm

One of the things I missed when I moved here was "Blue cheese (Salad) dressing". I had my family from the States send me some My Japanese family Tsuma, Otosan, akasan, and Onasan. All fell in,love with it. When I showed them the joy of Blue cheese dressing with Buffalo Wings they got into it even more.
On a side note they do have Pizza and cheese Burgers (at Mickey dee's and Mos Burger) so I doubt your idea of the Japanese not liking cheese is a generalization. Not to mention those things at Mc Donalds called "Munchers" or "Dunkers" that are pure deep fried cheese served with that sauce.

Buffalo sauce recipe
1/4 cup vinegar
1/2 squeezed lemon
Shake a Tabasco bottle liberally into mix
Add a couple shakes of pepper
a short shake of salt
Throw wings into large bowl with above mixture(after cooking wingS they should be fried but baking is OK too) toss and serve.
Serve with Blue Cheese dressing for dipping with Celery Stalks on the side

you know. I've seen people make fun of natto. "You know those Japanese are strange, they see something growing on soy beans that goes bad and eat it."

I always point out the same can be said about cheese. Some idiot one day saw some milk that went bad and ate it.

The reason many Chinese (and, for that much, Japanese) don't consume dairy products is because, biologically, they are more likely to develop a lactose intolerance. Almost every Chinese friend of mine has developed a lactose intolerance as they entered their mid-twenties. Additionally, all of my friends love dairy products, especially cheese - they just can't physically eat it, or they face the repercussions.

One of my cousins on my fathers side (all of them live in Japan) like cheese just the same as anyother person in the states. The other one here in the states actually gets sick by looking at blue cheese.
I don't like unmelted American cheese. It's icky & the thought that I used to eat it like a piece of candy is disgusting. Has anyone ever noticed that? The things that you once hated you now like or liked you hate?

The data is bit old though…
http://www.cheesefesta.com/data.htm
The consumption of cheese( especially natural cheese) rapidly increased over the last 15years.

The cheese price in Japan have risen recently because China expands cheese import from New Zealand, Australia, and other countries. The amount of import became triple in 3 years in China. (2002: 2533 ton → 2004:7250 ton) Some Experts say Chinese dietary pattern will become more westernize until Beijing Olympic,Expo in Shanghai.
I am afraid that cheese price in Japan will rise more.
