Post by x1337magex » Tue 09.12.2006 10:38 am

Hello,

I was just wondering, is there a way to say that you're ASIAN in japanese? I know how to say 私は 日本人 です! but that's saying I'm japanese, is there a way to replace 日本人 with asian? Thanks!!!! Btw, i don't know if that's 100percent correct, so please let me know (new to trying to use kanji)
Thanks again!!!!!! ^_^

Incidentally the meaning of "I'm Asian" is different depending on whether it is American English (I can't believe it's not English) or English.

Aha! I've seen Indians counted as Asians before, and I thought that was wierd because I would only include East Asians in the "Asian" category. Indians are Middle-Eastern :D

I get slightly annnoyed when people from asia minor are called asians. But I guess it's accurate. I just consider them middle-eastern.

Ahh, so it's that what we say in American English as "Asian" vs. "South Asian" is in British English "East Asian" vs. "Asian". It's kind of like in Japan they say, "Pear" vs. "Western pear", where as in English we say "Asian Pear" vs. "Pear".

I understand what you are saying Paul-san but it's more a distinction of country rather than which version of English you are speaking. I certainly don't speak "American English" but "Asians" to me are from South-East Asia and East Asia and not people from the "subcontinent", aka the Indian Subcontinent.

I remember watching coverage of the Birmingham riots last year and hearing people referring to "Asians" and thinking "they're not Asians, they're Indians and Pakistanis" :o
Don't complain to me that people kick you when you're down. It's your own fault for lying there
