Learning Chinese in school and....
I was wondering if learning Chinese will in turn help me learn Japanese also?

Well, it depends I guess it would help because of the Kanji But it would take longer to learn Chinese then just learning Japanese + kanji

Chinese is utterly different from Japanese.
It is true that Japanese language uses Chinese characters,
but its grammar and pronunciation are totally different.
And, to my regret, present Chinese characters are also
different from Japanese Chinese-characters!
It's difficult even for Japanese people to learn Chinese.
Better for you to choose either language to learn.

Yes chinese will only confuse you
If you really want to learn another asian language
Korean in probably the closest to japanese.

Dude, they said the already speak 普通話 (right?). I happen to dissagree, since you know hanzi, you have a huge advantage.:pB):D:);)
