Japanese rice does taste better than other types of rice, but still.. there's no way I could eat it everyday or even more than twice a week. I think it's a sort of pointless food. Japanese people think I'm weird when I don't eat the inevitable bowl of rice that comes with almost every meal here.

oh well, each to their own.;)

From the Food and Agricultural Orginization of the United Nations
http://www.fao.org/documents/show_cdr.a ... 084e06.htm

Rice Production for 2004 (millions of tons)
China 178.8
India 136.8
Japan 10.7
Brazil 12.5
US 9.8

The US produces the most rice in the west, only second to Brazil. Japan, despite the cultural and dietary importance of rice, is only the 7th largest producer of rice in Asia.

Hahaha! This thread cracks me up every time I read it. Anyway, yeah, a five pound rice bag lasts a LONG time. First of all, I don't cook much for myself. Second, the rice that comes in the bag is dry and uncooked, so a lot of the weight of rice that we eat is just the water that goes into it while cooking. A cup of uncooked rice will make A LOT of fried rice, certainly more than I can eat in one sitting. So I might eat 1 lb of cooked rice (that I cooked myself) in a week, but that's considerably less than 1 lb of uncooked rice. And yes, gnocchi is great. There's an excellent restaurant in the Sky Building in Yokohama that serves Kyabocha (pumpkin) gnocchi. By the way, pumpkin is excellent. I used to think pumpkin pie was the only way to use pumpkin, but damn, the Japanese have taken it to a whole new level. Pumpkin ice cream? Oh, man that's good. And as a side note, since when can Japanese eat more hotdogs than we can? Kobayashi-kun just downed 49 more this year to take the Nathan's Hotdog Eating Contest title again for the fifth year in a row. They posted that stat on Sportscenter right behind the Celtics dynasty and Lance Armstrong's 6 straight Tour de France victories.

I go through a five pound bag of rice in a day.

Of course, I've been eating it three times a day for about four years now, so I'm getting inventive in my ways to make it (seem) different.

rice with furikake (ground up dried fish parts)
rice with raw miso
rice with umeboshi
rice with baked fish on top
rice with chestnuts
rice with mushrooms
rice with tea poured over it
rice with ketchup
rice with salad dressing
rice with beer
rice with laundry detergent...

Like I said, I've been eating it three times a day for almost four years. I like rice, but I can't think of anything I would want to eat that often.

And if I leave even one grain of rice in my bowl, my wife yells "DON'T YOU LIKE RICE!?!?!?!"

It's VERY sour, at least to me. I didn't like it. You could pretty much order it at any izakaya or yakiniku that I went to in Tokyo. But, MAZUI!
