amiyumi, you basically just have to memorize it. Welcome to the world of the Japanese student. If you want to read stuff in Japanese, look for stuff that has furigana on top of the kanji. To tie this in with the thread on RICE the kanji for rice is 米。

I think Korean rice is like Japanese rice. I went there a couple years ago so I don't really remember, but I think it was stickier than Chinese rice. So, if you can't find Japanese rice, try Korean! Although I don't know how much easier that will be ;)... but there seems to be more Korean grocery stores than Japanese. so who knows..

Anyway, for someone who doesn't really like rice, I'm surprised I know these things :o

bempi = べんぴ = 便秘 = constipated.

Cant believe I actually knew what that meant (but I thought Id reply because I wouldnt have recognized either the ひらがな or 漢字 forms. ).

Anyways, Im making a special trip to the JapanCenter in London this week to buy some authentic Japanese ingredients for a little cooking. Anyone have any advice on brands of rice to look for and good accompaniments?

Mm, being cajun, I eat rice nearly every day :p Its one food I can never get tired of, cant live without it! I've never tried japanese rice though... Can someone describe in detail what its like? And what is the best substitute for it when you can't find it? Is it cooked differently?

I should probably research all of this... I've been meaning to try cooking japanese. Up to this point, all I've had thus far is what you find at american "japanese" resturants. I'd like to make sushi too... No clue where I could get fresh fish for that though... No way can I use the stuff they sell at wal-mart.

What you want to look for is "jasmine rice". That's the variety of sweet-smelling rice that Japanese (and Filipinos, like my wife) prefer.
