Japanese internet chatspeakers are the masters of the upright smiley faces, bunnies, and neko's.

There's also 笑, 汗, and v (which can look like a heart or a peace sign, depending on who you ask)

There's also a lot of little stuff that's easy to understand if you're familiar with the language... like using ゎ instead of the article は, and using ぢゃない instead of じゃない. Of course only high school girls write that way :D

Also sometimes kanji are swapped out for similar sounding ones, like 厨 is often substituted for 超 (i.e. "really").

And I thought it was bad enough trying to read English chatspeak. :|
I'm guessing the kanji swapping and ざゃない/じゃない errors are comparable to the liberties taken with English in chatrooms/text messaging? (Ex. "Foto 4 u" in place of "I have a picture to show you.")
Or is it done to a lesser extent so far as bastardizing the language goes?

It's quite different, actually. The English version is to save time/allow the writer to be lazy. The Japanese version is simply to look cute, and actually takes a lot of extra time (so you don't see it when people are tying to be terse).

Thanks.
It's kinda puzzling to me how people will go out of their way to make writing more complicated, though. ;)

Sometimes I think that I'm afraid of thinking, and that scares me.
